As per the leaks and early rumors, Qualcomm is soon expected to launch the next-gen mid-level SOC Snapdragon 660. Snapdragon 660 could sport an Octa-Core CPU with 4 Cortex A73 CPUs clocked at 2.2GHZ and 4 Cortex A53 CPUs clocked at 1.9GHz. It could also have custom Kryo cores just like the Snapdragon 820. Interestingly, it could be the first processor by Qualcomm to use the ARM Cortex A73 Cores. According to ARM, the Cortex A73 cores are 30% faster than the A72 cores; this would drastically improve the performance of mid-ranged phones. Also, due to the 14nm FinFET manufacturing process, Snapdragon 660 will be super power efficient.
Coming to other specifications, it will have the Adreno 512 GPU, X10 LTE Modem, dual channel LPDDR4X-1866 RAM and UFS 2.1 flash memory. It will also have the Qualcomm Quickcharge support.
It is most likely to launch in Q2 2017. Xiaomi’s Redmi Pro 2 could be the first smartphone running on the Snapdragon 660. The predecessor of Redmi Pro 2 was launched in August last year.
The rumored specs of Redmi Pro 2 are 4,500mAh battery, 6 GB RAM, 128 GB of Internal storage, 12MP Sony IMX 362 with 1/2.55” sensor and large 1.4µm pixels with Dual Pixel autofocus. It’s expected price is CNY 1,800 which is equivalent to 262 USD.
In this leaked image, we can see the specifications of Snapdragon 660 along with Snapdragon 835. Interestingly, OPPO and Vivo might also use this chip in their flagship smartphones.
Once launched, we might see many other OEMs opting for Snapdragon 660 in their mid ranged devices.
